Diani is one long beach, but where you base yourself changes the whole trip. Here's how the stretches differ — and who each suits best.
Diani Beach runs about 17km down Kenya's south coast, from Tiwi in the north to Galu and Kinondo in the south, with Diani Beach Road the spine. The sand is white and the lagoon calm at low tide — easy for families, lovely for couples, and a genuine bargain versus comparable beaches elsewhere.
The middle of the beach clusters the restaurants (Ali Barbour's Cave, Nomad, Sails), dive schools, beach bars and shops. Stay here if you want everything walkable and a bit of buzz. Great for couples and first visits.
South of central, the beach widens and quietens. This is villa country — pools, staff and space — ideal for families and groups who want privacy but are still ten minutes from the restaurants.
North of the Kongo River, Tiwi is rugged, cheaper and less developed. Fewer amenities, but a quieter, more local stretch and better prices.
Fly Nairobi–Ukunda (about an hour) and you're minutes from the sand, or take the SGR to Mombasa and drive ~45 minutes south across the Likoni crossing. Most hosts arrange transfers.
Galu and Kinondo in the south — wider, calmer beach and lots of villas with pools and space, still close to central restaurants.
Very — central Diani for dining and nightlife, or a quiet Galu villa for privacy. Sunset dhow trips and Ali Barbour's make it a romantic pick.
Dec–March and July–October are driest and sunniest. Avoid the long rains (April–May) if you want guaranteed beach weather.
