Two of Kenya's best beaches, two different moods. Here's how to choose between Diani and Watamu.
Choose Diani for a longer beach, more restaurants and a livelier scene. Choose Watamu for a quieter, more intimate coast with a superb marine park for snorkelling and diving.
Diani is a long, wide, powder-white strip — great for beach walks and watersports. Watamu is a series of pretty coves beside a protected marine park, with coral gardens just offshore.
Diani has more nightlife, dining and dive schools, plus the Colobus Conservation. Watamu is calmer and nature-led — turtles, snorkelling, Mida Creek and Arabuko-Sokoke forest nearby.
Diani: fly to Ukunda or SGR to Mombasa then drive south. Watamu: fly to Malindi then ~30 min, or SGR to Mombasa then ~2 hours north. Both offer villas from budget to beachfront; Watamu skews slightly quieter and can be better value.
Both are family-friendly. Diani has more variety and activities; Watamu is calmer with excellent snorkelling for older kids.
Watamu edges it for tranquillity; Diani's Galu stretch is also very quiet and romantic.
Yes — they're about 2 hours apart along the coast, so a split beach trip works well.
